Long before I had money to get myself a dope little racecar, I set my sights a little lower.
Back in ‘08 I started turning standard little kick scooters into powered beasts with... less than huge success. Even still, it was hard to overstate my satisfaction.
Fast forward to 2015, and I’d scored a job with a major automaker and wanted to reward myself with a present. I bought a Razer E300 electric scooter off the shelf, to see what the real deal was like.
It sucked out loud. Electric scooters are never
cool
, so they should at least be fast.
Thus began the journey of turning this thing into an electron-breathing, rubber-shredding monster.
Like so many bad ideas, it all started with a couple of drill batteries...

Sounds like Charles Guan’s Melon Scooter from ~8 years ago. Wish he hung around these parts, his brushless crazy vehicles are awesome.

Yeah, big fan of his stuff, particularly the karts.
It’s all properly engineered stuff with huge power and great performance, but it’s very much done from a “I have access to a massive machine shop at MIT” perspective. Very jealous of the waterjet cutting facilities and much more. That said he actually went against the grain once and did a kart design specifically for the masses which was very cool.
My build is more of the “I live in a tiny, crappy sharehouse in Victoria and need to do this with a $3 set of screwdrivers” perspective. I’ve also stuck to brushed motors because they’re a problem I’ve always wanted to conquer, from a personal learning perspective as much as any other.
I’ve got a plan to do a top speed build sometime in the next 12-18 months, but I’ll be sticking with the home-built methods. Think more Roadkill, less World Time attack.

I literally just realized after watching this video that if you add a tiny seat it turns into an electric scooter.
Stop me now.
